The Working Writer • Coming Soon

Build the business behind your writing.

The Working Writer is a practical, self-guided course for writers who want to understand the business side of an author career without losing sight of the writing itself. Built from over 15 years of independent publishing experience, it takes the pieces writers are constantly told they should be doing and shows how they fit together.

A course for working writers

Write the work.
Build the career.

You do not need to chase every trend, master every platform, or copy someone else’s version of success. You need to understand the choices in front of you well enough to build a writing business that makes sense for you.

Why this course exists

Writing the book is only part of the job.

When I started publishing, I knew how to write stories. I did not know how to build an author business.

The branding, websites, blurbs, platforms, reader expectations, marketing, products, pricing, and income decisions all came later. I learned most of it the way independent writers often do: by trying things, making mistakes, adapting, and figuring out what was actually worth my time.

My own author business now uses a hybrid model that combines ebook sales with subscription publishing. That experience is part of why this course is not built around the idea that there is one correct way to make a living from your writing.

The Working Writer grew out of that experience. It is the course I wish I had when I was trying to understand how all the pieces of publishing fit together.

You do not need more disconnected advice. You need a clearer way to understand what you are building, why it matters, and what you can safely ignore.

What you’ll learn

Practical skills for the business side of an author career.

The course moves step by step through the decisions that shape how you present your work, reach readers, sell what you create, and build something sustainable around your writing.

01

Build your writing business

Understand the parts of an author business and choose a model that fits the way you actually want to write and publish.

02

Build a recognizable author brand

Clarify your author identity, positioning, visual consistency, profile, and the promise readers should understand when they find you.

03

Build your author platform

Create a professional home for your work and give readers a clear path to find you, follow you, and stay connected.

04

Understand your reader and market

Learn how to identify reader habits, expectations, comparable books, and the places your audience is already spending time.

05

Create and manage what you sell

Think clearly about your publications and products so each one has a purpose, an audience, and a place in your larger business.

06

Convert interest into sales

Strengthen blurbs, offers, and the elements that help a potential reader understand what you are selling and why they might want it.

07

Build ongoing offers

Explore subscriptions and other ways to create continuing value and revenue without losing sight of the writing you want to do.

How the course works

The slides do the teaching.

This is not a video course with slides acting as decoration. The lessons are designed to stand on their own, so you can read, absorb, and work through them at your own pace.

Self-guided

Move through the material on your own schedule and return to lessons whenever you need them.

Slide-based

Every slide is student-facing and built to teach, not simply provide talking points for a video.

Actionable

Lessons include explanations, examples, frameworks, and step-by-step guidance you can apply to your own author business.

Practical

The focus is on making useful decisions—not creating more busywork or giving you another impossible list of things you should be doing.

Who it’s for

For writers who want the business to support the writing.

  • You want to understand the business side of being an independent author instead of making decisions by guesswork.
  • You are overwhelmed by conflicting advice about branding, platforms, marketing, audience growth, and income.
  • You are building an author career from scratch—or rebuilding one that no longer fits where you want to go.
  • You want practical guidance without being told that every writer must use the same platforms, products, or business model.
  • You want to spend your limited time and energy on the parts of the business that actually support your goals.
Why I created it

Some things worked. Some things absolutely did not.

More than 15 years in independent publishing has given me plenty of time to try different approaches, change direction, make mistakes, and learn what happens after the advice sounds good on paper.

I do not believe every writer needs the same business. I do believe writers deserve enough practical information to make their own decisions about the career they want to build.

That is what sits at the centre of The Working Writer: not someone else’s version of success. Yours.
